What is a Wine Cellar?

What is a cellar?  Most of us think a cellar is like a basement.  Actually, here is the definition according to The Free Dictionary.com: “(1) A room or enclosed space used for storage, usually beneath the ground or under a building. (2) A basement. (3)  An underground shelter, as from storms. (4)  A wine cellar.”  Let’s clarify further by reviewing the definition of wine cellar… “a storage space where wines are stored, such as a dark cool cellar.”  Based upon this definition, any storage space is a wine cellar as long as wines are stored there.  However, there are certain conditions that are necessary for wine …   All of us who love wine and prefer to keep an adequate supply on hand at home or business should be familiar with the conditions for an Ideal Wine Cellar.  Now, we may understand why the first wine cellars were caves … because the cave had the necessary conditions for wine.  That is, dark, cool, humid and little chance of vibration.
